Dear Students,
I am glad that so many of you wrote a very good, final exam. It demonstrated to me that you took the course seriously and that you learned the basics of philosophy. I designed the course with regard to the epistemological tasks of your future career and with regard to the question of ethics that lead to a happy and good life. I hope that I could convince you, or that, at least, you could build a more complex approach to knowledge.
Right now, I am sitting with my daughter and her mother in Cologne. We are expecting our second child and, of course, we are pretty happy about it. Tomorrow my flight is going back to Pittsburgh. We enjoyed an incredible New-Years-Firework from one of the highest spots in Cologne. Cologne seemed to be a landscape made of fireworks. Nevertheless, since teaching is very important to me, I also thought of my classes of 2014 and what to do in the future... Thank you for a good semester, I honestly enjoyed the work with you.
During your last year you might have lost a close relative, a love, you might have lost motivation, you might have lost so many things, but you know that we as human beings have an urge to go further and to shape the world with regard to ideals that are in our heart. This means, university should not only teach you the technical aspects of your profession, but it should make you a whole person. I hope I could walk with you a small but important part of this path. I wish all of you a happy and sucessful new year and maybe we see from time to time at Duquesne.
Moreover, if somebody would be willing to write me a short recommendation of half a page for my future applications, then this would be a great help. Please write me an e-mail. If you feel that I am somebody who should proceed in university education, you should also leave a comment on "Rate-My-Professors" (http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1900958).
Have a nice next semester and a happy new year
